Description

πŸ”₯ Limbo πŸ”₯
A burning second dimension for Hytale β€” floating islands over an endless lava sea, and everything that lives there

What is Limbo?

Limbo is a complete second world you reach through a gate you build yourself. Islands of dark, ember-cracked rock float over an ocean of lava, under a glowing red sky that rains embers. Far above stretches a rocky ceiling studded with huge red crystal boulders, and here and there the ceiling leaks: columns of lava pour all the way down into the sea.

Everything in Limbo is exclusive: a society of armed pig-folk, splitting fire elementals, flying fireball-throwers, three plant species with their own furniture lines, two new stone families for builders, the rarest ore in the game, fortress ruins with garrisons and loot, and a potion that lets you swim in lava. All of it runs on the server β€” your players need nothing but the game.

Getting there

Emberrock is the key. It turns up rarely while mining any block in the normal world β€” about one in 250, so a gate is a milestone rather than a grind. Stack about ten of them into an upright frame and the portal ignites by itself, and you are in Limbo.

Getting home is taken care of: a matching return gate stands waiting at the arrival point, and stepping through it puts you back exactly where you left from. Every player's own entry point is remembered separately, so two people who came from opposite ends of the map each return to their own doorstep.

The world

Limbo generates endlessly as your players explore, always as a band of floating islands between the lava sea below and the ceiling above. Time stands still at a permanent smoldering noon. The dimension has its own weather β€” a deep red sky with drifting embers.

The islands are veined with cooled magma, and some carry open lava ponds. Two surface biomes break up the rock: valleys of grey-brown Sorrow Sand and Limbo Earth, and fields of cooled magma with glowing cracks. Watch the shoreline for special magma islands β€” a quarter of them hide veins of adamantite, the rarest ore in the game. Burnt and burning trees stand on the island tops, their roots buried in the rock.

New arrivals always land at the same gate, and that arrival area is protected: nobody but an operator can dig it away or wall it in. Everything outside that square is yours to shape.

Fortresses

Scattered across the islands stand large ruins β€” watchposts, temples, and even a whole buried town, all rebuilt from dark stone. Every fortress is garrisoned by a warband of Ashen Emberkin that patrols its walls, and somewhere inside its barrels and crates one container holds a Slime Block β€” the only place in the game to find one. Fortresses are rare on purpose; finding one is an event.

The Emberkin

Limbo belongs to the Emberkin β€” armed pig-folk who do not take kindly to visitors. They come in five professions, each with its own gear and its own way of fighting: the Peon with his pickaxe, the Marauder with twin swords and a shield, the Hunter who opens with a bow and switches to daggers up close, the Berserker with a double axe, and the Priest with twin maces. They fight as a group and are loyal to their own kind.

Their fallen brothers still walk: the Ashen Emberkin are spectral blue undead versions of all five professions β€” tougher, harder-hitting, and holding the fortresses.

Every Emberkin carries gold: the living drop up to one Gold Nugget, the Ashen drop one or two.

The beasts

  • Calydon β€” a monstrous lilac boar with burning red eyes and giant tusks. Aggressive, fast, and worth hunting: each one drops Cooked Pork and Medium Leather at 50% each.
  • Salamander β€” a living cube of molten rock that hops across the magma fields. Kill a Greater Salamander and it splits into two Salamanders; kill those and each splits into two Lesser Salamanders. The small ones drop Essence of Fire one time in four β€” the ingredient for the flame staff at the arcane bench.
  • Ifrit β€” a burning spirit that circles overhead, takes aim, and hurls fireballs. Its face is a horned mask of flame.
  • Djinn β€” a huge pale ghost drifting through the upper air, hurling slow, heavy fireballs that hit much harder than the Ifrit's. Its long tentacles trail below it as it flies.
  • Skeleton β€” a bare-bones archer that keeps its distance and kites you across the island.
  • Draugr β€” a big black skeleton with a rusty steel sword that comes straight for you.
  • Hogman β€” the one peaceful face in Limbo: a pig-headed wanderer who minds his own business.
  • The Phage β€” a rare giant that hunts on six stilt legs: a virus grown to the size of a house. It spots you long before you spot it, sprints you down, and bites harder than an ogre swings β€” expect to be sent flying. Killing one is worth it: it drops Glowing Diamonds in six colors, self-luminous gems that never light their surroundings. Ten of one color craft a placeable diamond display block. Outside Limbo β€” should you ever lure or summon one there β€” it turns feral and hunts every living creature it sees, and its victims drop their normal loot. And you CAN summon one: build the Phage's own image from blocks β€” four two-high Limborack legs, a nine-block Limborack cross, two stacked Diamond Blocks of any color as the head β€” and it wakes, consuming the construct.

Every Limbo creature is fireproof β€” lava and magma mean nothing to them, so don't count on the terrain doing your fighting.

The Limboplant

Plant a Limbobloom on Limborack and it starts to climb. It branches, twists and grows a little differently every single time β€” no two plants are alike. Break the trunk and the whole plant comes down at once, dropping everything it was made of. Wild groves grow on their own out in the world.

Creeping vines

Two ground-cover species crawl across Limbo, and both keep growing on their own:

  • Toxic Vine β€” poison-green, at home on the magma fields. It creeps along the ground and handles terrain: at a ledge it grows an angled corner piece and climbs the step, up or down. Touch it and you are poisoned; at night it gives off a faint green glow.
  • Shade Vine β€” violet-black, and it grows nowhere but directly on the lava sea, venting black smoke and glowing purple. Touching it poisons you.

Both can be farmed: their blooms can be replanted β€” the Shade Bloom goes directly onto the lava surface, exactly like a waterlily onto water.

Furniture β€” three full lines

All three plants are complete material chains: harvest stems, press four of them into a block at the workbench, and craft furniture from ten blocks apiece at the furniture bench. Each plant has its own 15-piece set in its own colors β€” glowing ember-orange Limboplant, poison-green Toxic Vine, and violet-black Shade Vine:

bed, chair, stool, bench, table, counter, bookshelf, shelf, wardrobe, crate, door, trapdoor, ladder, sign and platform β€” 45 pieces of furniture in total.

Building blocks

  • Limborack β€” the dark ember-cracked island stone, and a full builder family: bricks, cobble, stairs, half slabs, walls, pillars, beams, ornate, smooth and decorative variants β€” 17 shapes at the Builder's Bench.
  • Limbomint β€” a pale mint brick made at the workbench from 1 Limborack + 1 Toxic Bloom, with its own 17 shapes at the Builder's Bench.
  • Bloodstone β€” a deep-red crystal cluster that burns from within and lights its surroundings. Harvest it from the boulders under the ceiling.
  • Sorrow Sand and Limbo Earth β€” the biome soils, for anyone building something bleak.
  • Magma Block β€” cooled magma with glowing cracks, mined right out of the magma fields.
  • Gold Block β€” four gold bars, for when the nuggets start piling up.
  • Slime Block β€” the fortress treasure. Any fall that ends on a Slime Block costs no health at all, and instead bounces you back into the air β€” the harder the landing, the higher the bounce. Footsteps on it squelch.

Gold and recipes

The Emberkin economy runs on gold:

  • 10 Gold Nuggets β†’ 1 Gold Bar (Workbench)
  • 4 Gold Bars β†’ 1 Gold Block (Workbench)
  • 1 Limborack + 1 Toxic Bloom β†’ 1 Limbomint Brick (Workbench)
  • 4 plant stems β†’ 1 plant block (Workbench)
  • 10 plant blocks β†’ any furniture piece (Furniture Bench)
  • 1 Limborack / 1 Limbomint Brick β†’ any of 17 shapes (Builder's Bench)
  • 10 Shade Blooms + 1 large empty bottle β†’ Lavaward Potion (Alchemy Bench)

Dropped materials feed native crafting too: Essence of Fire is the flame-staff ingredient at the arcane bench, and Medium Leather goes into armor.

Lavaward Potion

Brewed from ten Shade Blooms. Drink it and for thirty seconds fire cannot touch you β€” walk through flames, dive into the lava sea, harvest Shade Vines from below. The bottle comes back empty, ready for the next brew.

For server owners

Drop the jar into your mods folder and start the server. The first /glimbo limbo builds the dimension; after that the portal handles everything and no commands are needed. Everything persists across restarts: plant growth, vine growth, portals and world state.

Limbo is built to be a farm world: delete the world folder whenever it grows too large, restart, and the plugin cleans up its own data and builds a fresh one with a new layout. Nothing is left behind.

One quirk to know: time stands still in Limbo, so furnaces do not smelt there β€” bring your ore home. Every Limbo recipe uses the workbench and the other benches, which work normally.

Commands (operators)

  • /glimbo limbo β€” create the dimension, then travel to it
  • /glimbo emberkin [peon|marauder|hunter|berserker|priest] β€” summon an Emberkin (or zombie for an Ashen one)
  • /glimbo calydon | salamander | ifrit | djinn | skeleton | draugr | hogman β€” summon the other creatures
  • /gphage β€” spawn a Phage (the hunter in Limbo, the feral one anywhere else); /gphage clear removes them
  • /glimbo ore [radius] β€” count adamantite around you
  • /glimbo oreshow [radius] β€” expose adamantite veins for a look
  • /glimbo clear / clearall β€” remove summoned creatures

As a bonus for map-makers, the plugin ships a small robot menagerie from our construct experiments β€” /glimbo alone spawns an Automaton, and dog, brute, fang and widow summon a robot hound, a hulking trork-frame brute, a cobalt wolf and an onyx spider.

Everything is configurable

Adamantite chance per magma island, fortress frequency, Emberrock drop rate, and the protected radius around the arrival gate.

Compatibility

Server-side only. No client mod, no resource pack, no external dependency. Works alongside other Glymera plugins.

Changelog

GlymeraLimbo β€” Changelog

v5.0.0 (2026-08-28) β€” Hytale 0.6.0 (Update 6)

  • Rebuilt for Hytale 0.6.0 (Update 6). Requires server 0.6.0 or newer; this version does not run on 0.5.x, and older versions of this plugin do not run on 0.6.0.
  • Migrated to the 0.6.0 APIs (network protocol hytale/3, new command-permission API, block/chunk/entity API changes). Everything that was open to players before is open to players again.
  • Upgrade: delete the old jar from mods/, drop in the new one and keep the plugin's data folder β€” configs and saved data carry over unchanged. Restart the server.

4.0.0 β€” Feral, for real

Feral Phage overhaul
- The feral Phage (the one summoned outside Limbo) is now hostile to genuinely every living creature. Its old target list was written by hand and quietly missed a few β€” the new wildcard targeting covers everything without exception. Phages still leave each other alone.
- Inside Limbo nothing changes: the naturally spawning Phage hunts players only, by design.

Server fix
- Server boot no longer floods the log with hundreds of SEVERE lines caused by the feral Phage's old target list. Boot logs are clean again.

3.0.0 β€” The Phage

A new apex hunter walks the ash
- The Phage: a virus grown to the size of a house, stalking Limbo on six stilt legs. It spots you at twenty blocks, runs you down at full sprint, and every bite hits harder than an ogre's heavy swing β€” with a knockback that sends you flying. 400 health; bring gear.
- It spawns rarely (about one per fifty new chunks) and always alone. If you see one, it saw you first.
- Summon your own. Build the Phage's block effigy and it wakes: four two-high Limborack legs, a nine-block Limborack cross on top, and two stacked Diamond Blocks (any color) as the head. The construct is consumed and the creature rises where it stood β€” the tame kind in Limbo, the feral kind anywhere else. Since ten diamonds of one color press into one block, every summoned Phage is paid for by hunting its kin. (Server owners can disable the ritual with phageSummoning: false in the config.)
- Drops Glowing Diamonds in six colors (red most common) β€” self-luminous gems that shine on their own without lighting their surroundings. Ten diamonds of one color craft a placeable diamond display block at the workbench.
- Everything Phage ships inside GlymeraLimbo itself β€” no extra plugin needed.
- Outside the Limbo dimension the Phage turns feral: it hunts every living creature, not just players β€” and its victims drop their normal loot, just like a player kill. (/gphage spawns one for admins, /gphage clear cleans up.)
- Its head now carries glowing toxic-green stripes along the capsid edges β€” you can spot one from the air before it spots you. Almost.

Flier fix
- Ifrit and Djinn no longer glue themselves to walls and corners: a stuck flier now breaks out horizontally to the nearest open air pocket.

Spawn tuning
- Skeletons and Draugr now spawn noticeably more often β€” they were comparatively rare.
- Diamond series: six colors of self-luminous diamonds and display blocks, crafted ten-of-a-color at the workbench.
- As always, population happens when terrain generates: already-explored areas keep their current residents; the Phage and the denser undead appear in newly explored regions.

2.0.0 β€” Real darkness

Light overhaul
- Digging now gets properly dark: tunnels in the floating islands, the shoreline magma islands and the ceiling darken with depth, and light falls in through openings and fades β€” just like caves in the overworld. Until now the whole dimension was uniformly bright, even deep inside solid rock.
- The open world is untouched: same bright permanent-noon look everywhere above ground.
- Light sources finally matter in Limbo: torches and Bloodstone genuinely light up dark tunnels.
- The darkness follows what is actually above you: break all the way through the ceiling layer and the light comes back in; sealing a hole or building a roof makes it dark below again. Roofs, towers and island overhangs cast soft shadows.

Colored light fixes
- Bloodstone now glows deep red instead of white. (Light definitions with a Radius key overexpose the client's light to white β€” all five Limbo lights now use color-only definitions like the native crystals.)
- Emberportal light is red-orange again; Limbobloom, Shade Bloom and Toxbloom keep their true colors.
- Emberportal texture: restored the swirl contrast that had collapsed during recoloring.
- Note: a block's light color is baked into the chunk when it is placed β€” blocks placed before this update keep their old white light until broken and re-placed; newly generated and newly placed ones glow correctly.

Existing worlds
- Safe to update: an existing Limbo world keeps working as-is. Chunks generated before 2.0.0 simply keep the old always-bright behavior; newly explored areas get the real darkness.
- To upgrade already-explored areas without a world reset, stand in them and run the new OP command /glimbo relight (re-measures a 49Γ—49 area around you). Also use it if a room carved into the ceiling with builder tools stays bright β€” command edits bypass the digging detection.
- Heads-up before relighting player bases: relit areas follow overworld lighting rules, so existing enclosed builds (houses, rooms carved into rock or ceiling) become dark inside and will want torches β€” exactly like an overworld house. Player blocks are never touched; this is lighting only, but it is not reversible per area, so relight builds deliberately.
- For a completely fresh start, deleting the world folder still works as before.
